Phoenician glassware was of an excellent quality which had lovely, deep, rich colours, but the fine sand on their coasts also led the Phoenicians to develop an almost pure colourless glass which was unique and much sought after. The making of glass was taken to new heights by the Phoenicians, and they have been credited with inventing glass blowing.
The Phoenicians were also famous for their superb carved ivories. The Israelite and Assyrian kings in particular sought great quantities of ivory carvings to help decorate their buildings and furniture. Once Syrian elephants became extinct around 950 BC, the Phoenicians imported elephant tusks from India.
